Car window tint and home window tint are very similar in concept but they can be different in composition.
Car window tinting is designed to shrink to curved glass and it has a mechanical adhesive like scotch tape to aggressively grab the glass. Auto tinting should always be cleaned with ammonia free cleaners.
Home window tinting will not shrink. Some window film manufacturers use a chemical adhesive that is one-time water activated. This chemical adhesive is designed to bond hard and dry over time. This adhesive has been on the market since the late 1970’s without any reported failures in certain brands of window films. Home window tinting made with these adhesives can be cleaned like any other window – ammonia products are o.k.
Window films designed for automotive application can block close to 70% of the heat where architectural films can block up to 84% of the heat. Both block over 99% of the UVA and UVB rays from the sun.
